Eco-Schools

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. In working towards these awards children study nine topics: energy, water, biodiversity, school grounds, healthy living, transport, litter, waste and global citizenship. Having already achieved the bronze and silver awards we are now working towards the top award, a 'Green Flag'.
Our School
As a school we are determined to do all that we can to preserve and improve our environment. Within our curriculum we try to ensure that all children appreciate their environment and begin to understand how they affect it, and what they can do to lessen their impact upon it. Aspects of 'environmental education' are an integral part of our planned activities every term and many of our topics have environmental links.
Our Eco-Team has the task of helping the whole school (children, staff and parents) to be more conscious of environmental issues including saving energy, reducing waste, improving recycling and limiting litter around school.
We are very fortunate to have fantastic school grounds that enable us to investigate many aspects of the environment.
Pond Area
Over a period of many years, with parental help, we have created a wonderful pond area that includes a range of habitats for both flora and fauna.
Woodland Walk
On the site of our old adventure play area we are now developing a woodland walk. Whilst this incoporates some of the adventure play equipment it is essentially a quite area. Eventually, it will have a woodland path weaving between a small wood of native trees with a seated area and a 'challenge walk' utilising the adventure equipment.
Allotment
In the last three years we have created a school allotment adjacent to our small apple orchard. Withthe help of parents and friends of the school we hope to expand our use of this area. Children will help to grow a range of fruit and vegetables that will be used in school, or sold to parents.

Resources
For children who would like to find out more about our environment, (or need to for homework!) here is a fantastic website that gives hundreds of useful links and resources: http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/themes/theenvironment/index.htm#
